The Carlisle-Settle Line is rightly described as Englands most scenic railway. Building it was one of the great Victorian engineering achievements, providing a third mainline link between London and Scotland through some of the most inhospitable countryside.
Today, the line offers an opportunity to enjoy the rugged landscape from the comfort of your carriage seat as you cross the magnificent Ribblehead Viaduct, a quarter-mile long, 104 feet high edifice, standing on 24 arches which is the iconic memorial to those who built this railway by hand in the 1870s.
The Settle-Carlisle Railway Guide provides you with a wealth of information, from details of stations, tunnels and viaducts to places to stay, eat and relax along the way.
And the highlight is our Audio Guide, narrated by Radio 4s Mark Holdstock and written by Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Lines Richard Morris. It points out places of interest along the way, bringing your journey to life with the history of the line, how it was built, and the frantic struggle which took place to save it from closure. Controlled by your position using GPS, its an accurate and informative tale which will enhance your enjoyment of a journey along this magnificent railway.
